This study tries to grasp the orientation and characteristics of the poetic world of Yun Dong-ju focusing on feelings of pity. An emotional circuit shown in order of ‘shame → self-pity → public pity’ reveals that Yun Dong-ju`s poems are built based on poetics of pity. Public pity is the key mechanism to practice ‘poetic justice.’ And poetic justice appears as the orientation and detailed method of resistance in Yun Dong-ju`s poems.
In Yun Dong-ju`s poems, shame is a feeling of stigmatizing oneself by censoring the practice of public pity and distancing oneself. The stigmatization means the shameful punishment of Yun Dong-ju who shows how a poetic judge punishes his stigmatized self by making his way to a desert or keeping himself in a well or a grave. Yun Dong-ju`s shame is special because it works as the instinctive feeling which makes the poet allowing in self-pity a major aim for a more public pity.
`Loss` that Yun Dong-ju realized in shame leads to self-pity by causing a deficient ego. Especially, `shedding tears` and `sorrow`which often appear in Yun Dong-ju`s poems are the self-awareness that he lost precious things, the poetic responses to pain of his loss, and the poetic mechanism of self-pity. Yun Dong-ju tried to get over the reality in a way, by holding his hand to himself and requesting tears and comfort rather than sinking into the abyss of loss. He could perceive at the public pity beyond the boundary between `himself and others` when he embraced the deficient ego with pity. In short, Yun Dong-ju`s self-pity means his way of embracing his deficient ego in the pain of loss and power to restore the fragmented people.
Yun Dong-ju showed an aspect of a poetic judge by embodying the public pity with the imagination of light. He tried to sympathize with our people who lived with the sorrowful reality under the Japanese oppression and to rescue them from the abyss of darkness by shining them all with a light. Poet Yun Dong-ju`s effort to tune the damaged age by bringing light to them is shown as a poetic justice where he takes the position as a poetic judge. The way to listen to the pain of the people and tune the age of darkness is by bringing in the light, which is the point that meshes with the compassionate ethics that Nussbaum emphasized, in other words, the role of the poetic judge and justice.
Public pity and the age tuning through a symbol of the light are the way to practice Yun Dong-ju`s unique poetic justice which is difficult to be found from other poets. In this sense, it is no exaggeration to say that Yun Dong-ju is the poet who proved the qualities of `a poet as a judge` emphasized by Nussbaum with the most exemplary poetic texts. His effort to take a close look at those who are under-privileged and have suffered but now have their damaged lives fully restored to them is the practice of poetic justice. Therefore, poetic justice through the public pity is the token which reveals resistance of Yun Dong-ju`s poems and the poetic orientation based on pity. Poetic justice pursued by poetics of pity is the distinct characteristics of Yun Dong-ju`s poetic world which is difficult to explain enough exhaustively from the self-reflection or the religious perspective.
