오늘날 세계적으로 인기를 누리고 있는 소설가 베르나르 베르베르(Bernard Werber)가 쓴 첫 번째 희곡 『인간 Nos amis les humains』은 극텍스트의 중요성이 작가의 ‘다르게 생각하기’로 형상화된 ‘연극 소설(roman-théâtre)’로, 다시 말해 전통적인 극작법을 뛰어넘어 그렇지만 텍스트의 수준에서 때로는 대화 형식으로, 때로는 지문으로, 때로는 서술적 묘사로 극을 이끌어나가는 문학 장르를 초월한 파격적인 작품이다. 『인간』은 인류의 마지막 생존자인 한 쌍의 남녀가 한 순간에 우주 어느 행성의 유리 감옥에 갇히게 되고, 그 안에서 지구에서의 인간의 삶과 행동에 대한 남녀 간의 견해 차이를 보여주는 2인극인데, 작가는 ‘외계 동물의 애완인간’이라는 독특한 설정과 세밀하고 풍부한 상상력으로 인간의 모습을 그려내고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 첫째, 막과 장의 구분도 없이, 대사와 지문들을 불규칙하게 병렬시켜 거의 소설과 흡사한 『인간』 속에 표현된 언어들을 극텍스트의 구성 요소인 대사와 지문으로 나누어서 작가가 어떤 극 기법(technique dramatique)으로 ‘연극 소설’을 완성해나가는지 그 과정을 파악해보는 것이다. 둘째, 『인간』에는 인물들 간의 행위나 지문 속에서 사건의 전체적인 내용을 함축하고 통일성을 이루는 줄거리가 있다. 작가는 지구에서의 인간 생활과 우주 공간의 외계 생명체가 바라본 인간 존재를 철학적･윤리적･정치적인 관점에서 어떤 줄거리로 구성하고, 어떤 결말에 이르게 하며, 또한 그 결과를 독자나 관객은 어떻게 인식해야(또는 받아들여야) 하는지 가늠해보았다. 셋째, 극텍스트 속에 숨겨져(또는 드러나) 있는 모든 연극적 장치들을 찾아내고, 국내･외 무대에서 공연된 영상자료를 비교･분석하여, 연극적 장치들이 실제 상연에서는 어떻게 연출되어 어떤 연극적 효과로 관객에게 전달되는지를 간파해내는 것이다. 베르베르 문학의 특성인 ‘다르게 생각하기’로 쓰인 『인간』에서 인간이 외계 생물체에 의해 애완동물로 전락할 수도 있다는 설정이 꽤나 섬뜩하지만 기발하기도 하고, 단 두 명의 등장인물과 하나의 장소만으로도 많은 이야기를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 것이 매우 놀랍고 흥미롭기도 하다. 하지만 『인간』은 읽는(또는 관람하는)동안 보다 읽고 난(또는 관람한) 후에 우리 인간에게 더 많은 여운을 남겨주고 있다. 세계 곳곳에서 인간의 온갖 만행이 드러나고 있음에도 과연 인간은 지구상에서 계속 살아가야할 존재인가, 아니면 그 죄악으로 인해 사라져야할 존재인가? 『인간』은 우리 인간의 행동에 뒤따르는 모든 결과에 대해 다시 한번 생각케하고 일깨워주는 작품이다.

Nos amis les humains, the first play ever by novelist Bernard Werber who is enjoying immense popularity throughout the world today, is an unprecedented work that transcends conventional literary genres. It is a ‘drama novel’ in which the important place of the play text is given shape by the author’s method of ‘thinking differently’. In other words, it has transcended conventional dramaturgy but at the level of the text the play’s contents are revealed sometimes in the form of a conversation, sometimes a text, and sometimes a narrative description. In Nos amis les humains, we see a man and a woman, the last two survivors of the human race, being locked up in an instant in a glass prison cell on a particular planet in the universe. The story unfolds in the prison cell as a two-person act that demonstrates the differences between the viewpoints of men and women regarding the former life and behavior of the human race back on earth. The author portrays mankind in a unique setup as ‘pet humans of extraterrestrial animals’ using his very detailed and rich imagination. This study will, first of all, seek to understand which drama technique the author uses in the process in which he completes his ‘drama novel’ by haphazardly laying out the characters’ lines and texts without regard to the divisions of acts and scenes and by taking the expressions in Nos amis les humains which is close to a novel and dividing them into the categories of lines and text, the two major components of play text. Secondly, Nos amis les humains has a plot that implies the events’ overall contents in the actions of the characters or the texts and thus achieves unity. We have attempted to judge how the author has structured the plot, what conclusion the plot leads to, and how the reader or the audience should perceive(or accept) the humans’ life on earth and human existence as viewed by exterrestrial life in outer space from a philosophical, ethical, and political point of view. Third, we seek to find all the dramatic devices that are hidden(or revealed) in the play text, compare and analyze the visual materials that were used in performances in and out of the country, and figure out how such devices and directed in actual performances and what dramatic effects are conveyed to the audience. In Nos amis les humains which was written by ‘thinking differently’ which is one of Werber’s literary traits, the setup where humans have descended to the status of pets for extraterrestrial creatures seems quite frightening but also novel, and it is amazing that a lot of the plot can take place in one setting with just two characters. But Nos amis les humains leaves us humans with more lingering images after reading(or watching) the work than while reading (or watching) it. Even today, humans are committing all kinds of atrocities all over the world. Should humans continue to live on earth, or is it better that they disappear from the earth because of their many sins? Nos amis les humains is a work that wakes us up and makes us think about the consequences of our actions.
