New Trends on the American System of Music Teacher EducationEunshik ChoiKnowledge-based Society and post-modernism are two key words which characterize the 21st century. The educational system and the society in which the educational system is operating are in a reciprocal relationship. In other words, changes in the educational system affects the society, and vise versa.In spite of the fact that the society has changed so as to function based on digitalized knowledge and post-modern mentality, the school system has kept traditional way of transferring objectified skills and knowledge to the next generation.The teacher is a central factor which affect the quality of education. The same is true for music education. Reform of music teacher education is an urgent agenda in that sense.The USA undergone changes in social structure ahead of our own society. Accordingly, the school system of the USA has put significant efforts to be adjusted to the social changes. Reform in music teacher education has been one of the efforts done in the higher education institutes.The purpose of this study was to examine the current trends in music teacher education in the USA. The result of this study is expected to contribute to the reform in music teacher education in Korean higher institutes.Five main trends were identified among other changes: first, school-based teacher education; second, critical music teacher education, third, development of national standards for music teacher education curriculum, fourth, national supervision and administrations of teacher certification examination, and fifth, integration of ICT into music teacher education program.Each of these categories reflected social needs toward the school system. In addition, these trends of American education can function as meaningful resources for reforming music teacher education system in Korea, so as to reflect social changes.
