The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinion of Gangwon-do elementary school teachers about Korean music training program for them and to develop the programs. The population of survey is 453 elementary schools in Gangwon-do. 227 elementary schools were randomly sampled by the systematic sampling method. The questionnaire developed by this researcher were sent to 227 elementary schools, and asked to response by whom was recognized as an advanced teacher in Korean traditional music education in each school. 181 teachers sent their responses and the rate of collection was 79.9 percent.
Most teachers of Gangwon-do expect the opportunity of Korean music training program to be highly expanded. They want that the content of textbook about Korean music would be included in the teacher training program, and expect the development of their teaching ability of traditional music based on the content of textbook. In addition, they mostly prefer the skill-oriented program than the theory-oriented, and want that more teachers qualified in Korean music to be included in the instructor group of the programs.
Based on the result of survey, some suggestions were provided: 1) the opportunity of teacher training programs on Korean traditional music need to be expanded, 2) the content of programs would be desirable when it is connected to the classroom teaching, 3) basic skills on Korean music should be emphasized in the programs, 4) the planner of programs needs to recognize the effect of well-trained teacher and to include them in the instructor group, 5) each instructor must have an effort to improve his/her ability and character as an qualified instructor, 6) the goverrunent and experts should develop and support local programs for teachers who are interested in Korea music education, 7) textbooks for teacher training programs could be developed and spreaded by a research team, 8) all institutions should respect one another and develop an co-operative system of teacher training programs for Korean music.
The improvement of teacher training program is essential to advance Korean music education in classrooms. Therefore the planners and instructors of the program should develop the contents and teaching methods of Korean music, and the participants try to make the most of the program.
