This study intends to prepare the basic data for improving the efficiency of teaching and learning by analyzing interaction styles in the elementary science teaching by discovery learning model, utilizing Hyman's question-answer analysis. This study analyzed four videos of science classes based on discovery learning model among those about excellent teachers' classes of the elementary schools in metropolitan city. As a result of this study, first, the interaction styles in the elementary science teaching by discovery learning model were shown in the descending order of frequency as: ‘soliciting-responding-reacting', ‘soliciting-responding,' ‘soliciting-responding-reacting-(additional) reacting', ‘soliciting-responding-(various)reacting-(additional)responding-(additional)reacting', ‘soliciting', ‘structuring-soliciting-responding-reacting.' Second, analyzing the interaction styles in the five stages of teaching by discovery learning model, the most frequently shown style was ‘soliciting-responding-reacting,' differing from the previous expectation that various interaction styles would be shown because particular strategies were used in each stages. Finally, analyzing the proportion of behaviors in the elementary science teaching by discovery learning model, teachers' behaviors were mostly structuring or soliciting, while those of students were mostly responding. Also, students' reacting behaviors were of small number, while soliciting behaviors were done mostly by teachers.
