This study is designed to investigate if individuals’ regulatory focus could be used for the market segmentation in the context of Asian restaurants in the US. A cluster analysis and subsequent analyzes confirmed that there were three distinct market segments; high regulation, medium regulation, and high promotion and low prevention groups. Cross-tabulations showed that there were significant differences among the three segments in terms of gender, age, education level, annual income, and restaurant type. It was found that there were more of female, younger, less-educated, and less-income customers in the high regulation segment whereas there were more of male and older customers in the medium regulation segment. Finally, there were more of higher educated and higher income customers in the high promotion and low prevention segment. Therefore, current study identified whether and how individuals’ chronic regulatory focus would play a meaningful segmentation base that leads to different behavioral responses in the context of ethnic restaurants.
