The Decadent Movement was started as to oppose the loss of the independent and pure aesthetic value of the art itself caused by the prosperity of modernization and the contradiction of capitalism. This paper noted the fact that China in the germinal stage of modernization also saw the advent of fin-de-siècle trend which came about in the West from revolting against the modernization it had already completed. Also paper will focus on the research on the Chinese modern writer, Shao Xunmei who wanted to absorb all the West’s sentiments at the turn of the century itself and express them in his own literary works. To this end we will analyze the essay critique collection, Hands That Sting Like Fire which is considered as the definitive fruition of Western literature education he received from Cambridge. Hands that sting like fire is a collection of prose written by Shao Xunmei as a sign of ‘homage’ to Western Décadence poets he met during study-abroad and writers in their influence. Based on this, Shao Xunmei seems to be in awe of the powerful “art for art’s sake” that can overthrow the existing literary system, escaping from the established historical, social and moral ideologies He strongly believed in independence of art from outside beliefs and regarded Decadence as a style and attitude.
