The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum conditions of methanol extraction concentration (0, 25, 50, 75, 99%, v/v), extraction temperature (20, 30, 40, 50, 60℃) and extraction time(20, 30, 40, 50, 60 mins) in order to increase the antioxidant activity from Erigeron canadensis. To find out optimum conditions, tests of total polyphenol content, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were experimented by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum conditions were 50% of methanol extraction concentration at 40℃ for 60 mins and found that the maximum of total polyphenol content was 1,307.890 mg% (R²=0.9891) in this condition. The maximum level of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were 76.75% (R²=0.8997) and 71.84% (R²=0.9996) at 75% and 50% of methanol extraction concentrations at 30℃ and 60℃, and for 50 mins and 60 mins, respectively. As a result of RSM test, the optimum conditions of total polyphenol content range were 43% of extraction concentration at 50℃ for 60 mins. The optimum conditions of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity for methanol extraction were the following: 67% of extraction concentration, at 50℃ for 50~60 mins. Based on this study, it is expected that Erigeron canadensis can be a good supplement of healthy food for its function as an antioxitants.
