This study is to examine how emotional labor and job exhaustion of beauty professions affect their quality of life. Furthermore, it aims to provide academic materials for their mental health. The sample of the study is based on beauty service workers who lives in Seoul and the metropolitan area where is around Seoul. For this study, 450 questionnaires were distributed in total, and 403 documents were finally used as analysis materials. All collected data were statistically processed using the SPSS 20.0. The analysis results of the entire data are as follows: demographic characteristic shows that 82.4 percent of examined beauty professions are women, and for age group, it indicates that 20s is the highest at 35.5 percent. In addition, in terms of academic background and average monthly income, the highest at 33.5 percent or more of graduate master’s degree as level of education while the highest is between 2 million won and 3 million won in average monthly income. It is clarified that examined beauty professions’ fields of work are mostly related with hair beauty with 59.1 percent and skin care with 18.4 percent. In the case of positions, 40 percent of all cases are directors which is the highest, and it is confirmed that freelancers and franchise shops have high proportion of entire business types. When looking at the effect of job exhaustion by positions on his or her work and that of quality of life, there are obvious results for four positions: staffs, designers, manager, and directors. In the case of staffs, the imbalance between work and their life increases as emotional exhaustion increases. And the balance between work and life decreases as the exhaustion of peer relationship increases. Especially, the lower the exhaustion of relationship with customers, the higher the pursuit of happiness by their works. In the case of designers, the pursuit of happiness through work also increases as relationship exhaustion with customer increases. Also, the imbalance between work and life increased as job and relationship exhaustion with coworkers increases. In particular, the distinction between work and life increases as physical exhaustion increases at the same time. In the case of the manager, the pursuit of happiness through work increases as the exhaustion of customer relations increases, and the division of work and life decreases as the emotional exhaustion increases. Definitely, in the case of the director, the pursuit of happiness by work increases as the exhaustion from relationship with the customer increases. Imbalance between work and life increases as the emotional exhaustion of peer relations increases. The conclusion of this study is that emotional labor is treated as an essential act in the beauty industry; however, in the case of excessive job exhaustion, his or her physical and mental imbalance may lead to poor quality of life. Thus, it is necessary for beauty professions to consult with professional counselors on a regular basis as a mental health management. Moreover, it is fundamental to set up the institutional measures for them to resolve conflicts with customers or colleagues in their working places.
