Sylvia Plath’s poems, such as “Daddy,” have been interpreted as the revelation of her rage against her father figure (including Ted Hughes). However, it is evident that the speaker’s hostility and anger in several of her poems are not directed at her father, but at her mother. The speaker reveals anger and hostility towards the threatening mother. In her journals, Plath also describes her mother as “a mother’s clutch,” or even “the vampire.” This paper will explore the reasons for the speaker’s (Plath’s) hostility and hatred, using Melanie Klein’s notion of the relationship between a mother and an infant. Klein argues that in “paranoid-schizoid position” (1-3 months), the infant projects its own aggression to the bad object if the mother does not feed her child. In the depressive position (after 4 months), the infant feels guilt and anxiety for the damage it has inflicted on its mother in the early position, and accepts its mother as “a good and complete object.” In “Moon and Yew Tree,” “Disquieting Muses” and “Medusa,” the speaker is respectively obsessed with “persecutory anxiety” for the threatening mother figure. The speaker never enters the “depressive position” in which she is able to experience feelings of guilt or “depressive anxiety” for the hatred for her mother.
