Purpose: High-intensity resistance exercise is the ideal exercise intensity for muscle enlargement and muscle strength increase, but high-intensity resistance exercise has its limitations for many elderly people who cannot withstand excessive exercise loads, for rehabilitation patients, and for athletes. Recent studies have reported positive effects of the Low Intensity Blood Flow Limitation Exercise (BFRT) that can overcome the limitations of such high-intensity resistance exercise.
Method: This study comprehensively evaluated the effect of blood flow restriction training (BFRT) on thigh muscle shape and function through Meta-analysis. The RewMan 5.3 statistical program was used to systematically synthesize and analyze the relevant data, and the mean difference (MD) evaluation was performed on the indicators between the low-intensity blood flow limiting exercise (BFRT) group and the control group. 16 pieces of literature were included as a whole.
Results: Meta analysis results showed that the effects of leg press 1RM (kg), knee extension torque (Nm), and femoral cross-sectional area CSA (cm²) of subjects in the FBR exercise group can be significantly increased compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Summarizing the results, BFRT is found to have a significant improvement in the muscle shape index (pseudiceps cross-sectional area) and muscle function index (Leg Press 1RM, knee extension torque) after exercise for a certain period of time. In addition, the mechanism by which blood flow restriction exercise improves muscle enlargement and muscle strength is still unclear, so further research is needed in the future.
