The purpose of this study is to take a step further in enhancing Chinese education by seeking appropriate educational methods on the basis of the investigation into the degree of Chinese majors’understanding of the structure of ‘V在NL.
This study collected the data from 40 subjects in two ways: (a) the questionnaire was directly distributed and gathered, or (b)it was individually sent and received through Kako Talk.
The findings of the study are as follows. First, in relation to the appearance positions of the adverb 在 and the result complement 在, 97.5% of the subjects were aware of the difference between these two structures.
Secondly, as for the semantic focus of the ‘在NLV’ and ‘V在NL’ structures, only five percent of the subjects showed an accurate awareness of the difference.
Thirdly, when translating the ‘V在NL’ structural sentence into Korean, the subjects showed a high error rate of its aspect. Fourthly, concerning mutual conversion between ‘在NLV’ and ‘V在NL’, the highest error rate appeared when 了or 着 must be added to change the ‘在NLV’ structure. None of the subjects answered all the questions correctly. Finally, for the possibility of converting ‘V在NL’ to ‘V到NL’, the average error rate was 62%, indicating the subjects’low understanding of the V在NL structure.
Based on the results of this experimental study, it is suggested that learning about the V在NL structure should be reinforced. It will be helpful if the following teaching method is used, focusing on the V在NL semantic structure and its conversational features.
Step 1: Briefly explain the appearance position of the 在NL phrase and the usage difference between an adverb and a result complement.
Step 2: Teach the meaning of the V在NL structure.
Step 3: Help learners to understand the utilitarian differences between the 在NLV and the V在NL structures.
Step 4: Briefly mention particular verbs that are not available in the V在NL structure and account for their semantic features.
Although the complexity of the V在NL structure causes some difficulties in understanding it, instructors’careful attention and guidance and their active use of the teaching method suggested above can alleviate them and help learners to use it more accurately.
