This article attempted to speculate on the methods and purpose of Baekje’s acceptance of Confucius’s texts. For reasons of such, the article examines the changes and meaning of Confucius’s text acceptance patterns during the Hanseong Era, and the changes and meaning of Confucius’s knowledge acceptance method due to the fall of Hanseong.
The very origin of the Confucius texts imported from China can be found in the Hanseong Baekje Era. Around AD 3, the acceptance of 〈Chunqiuzuoshichuan〉 was confirmed, and it is considered to have been triggered by the Baekje Royals’ attempts to subsist and thrive. During this era, Baekje accepted Confucius knowledge in textual formats through the Han Commanderies and Chinese immigrants. Through, Baekje came across new knowledge and culture that enabled them to overcome their current status. However, it is inappropriate to view them as figures educated within the official educational system of Chinese thrones. At last, Confucius’s knowledge was accepted to secure the objective for their status of war confronted, the ruling of the public and others during the Hanseong Baekje Era through the Chinese influences.
Due to the fall of Hanseong in 475, the texts accepted from China during the Hanseong Baekje Era were lost, and the circumstances demanded another acceptance of texts from China. In 484, Baekje sent Naebeobjoapyung Sayaksa to Southern Qi to recover from the system demolished by the fall of Hanseong. However, when it failed due to an encounter with the Goguryeo army, Baekje directly requested a doctor to China to bring change to the method of accepting Confucius’s knowledge. This was when a doctor of etiquette lecture and a doctor of Maoshi came to Baekje under the throne of King Seong. Baekje then received the meaning of courtesy and poetry from scholars belonging to the educational institutions of the Chinese Dynasty, which led to the production of political ideology. After the doctors of the Chinese Dynasty returned to his home country, Confucius’s knowledge was continuously passed down by Chinese influences during the earlier period and spread widely to the ruling class and intellectuals. Later, by the early-mid 7th century, the Five Classics, the Hundred Schools of Thought, History were read in Baekje, and in 〈Heukchi Sangji Cemetery Name〉 and 『Japanese Seogi』, 『Chunqiuzuoshichuan』, 『the Analects of Confucius』, 『Han Shu』, 『Shiji』, and 『Hou Han Shu』 were confirmed to have been read.
