The advent of artificial intelligence technology has led to the rapid development of the artificial intelligence consumer market in recent years. As intelligent robots with human-machine dialogues, movements, emotions and other feedback functions become increasingly socialised, human-machine relationships are evolving and changing in accordance with these developments. Despite the significant attention that scholars have devoted to the study of human-machine relationships, studies focusing on human-robot relationships remain scarce. Consequently, this dissertation undertook a more comprehensive examination of domestic and international studies on human-robot relationships, analysing the influence of human-robot relationships on consumer behaviour from the perspectives of relationship type, consumer cognition, and the moderating role of gadget-loving propensity. The aim was to stimulate further research in this field.
This study introduces a novel categorisation of human-robot relationships, distinguishing between instrumental and emotional relationships, and emotional human-robot relationships into unidirectional and bidirectional emotional relationships. This allows for a more nuanced exploration of the evolving trends in human-robot relationships in the context of artificial intelligence and the underlying influence mechanisms. The study is designed to delve deeply into the influence of human-robot relationships on consumer behaviour through three experimental studies. By investigating the diverse forms of human-robot relationships that emerge between intelligent robots and consumers, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the coexistence of humans and robots. Additionally, the study offers theoretical guidance and practical insights for AI companies, enabling them to select appropriate target groups, diverse types of intelligent robot designs, and the government to formulate ethical and moral industry norms.
