This paper applies affect theory to Jack London’s The Sea-Wolf, focusing on how the characters are emotionally affected by each other and their environment. The novel captures a range of emotional responses and interactions, particularly as the characters react to the intense and often violent events aboard The Ghost. By analyzing key affective moments, this study explores how characters’ emotions, both nonverbal and noncognitive, shape their actions and relationships. The paper pays particular attention to protagonist Humphrey Weyden’s emotional evolution as he navigates his harrowing experience aboard the ship, severed from his previous life of comfort. Through Weyden’s first-person narration, London illustrates the affective exchanges between characters, notably the tensions between Weyden and Larsen, and the eventful disruption caused by the arrival of Maud Brewster. This study traces how these affective encounters reveal larger thematic concerns in the novel, such as power dynamics, survival, and identity. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes that London’s narrative is designed to elicit affective responses from the reader, including empathy and moral reflection, thereby bridging the emotional experiences of the characters with those of the reader.
