This paper is about the maintenance and change of Tongje in the nobility village formed in East coast area. Generally, Tongje in Korea has been disappearing because of the affect of the modernization and urbanization. But this paper is purposed to grasp a concept how has been existed Tongje in the nobility village where has remained lots of traditional aspects and what the meaning is.
There ard a number of nobility villages in the Yeonghae area along the East coast, Korea. A number of lineage group; had came into activities in Yeonghae area since the middle of Joseon. In this process, the nobility villages in several places were formed and most of the nobility villages have 'Tongje'. This paper was collected the materials focused on 'Tongje' in the representative nobility villages; Geosiri, Wonguri, Inyangri.
Presented below are several results of the research. First, Tongje in the nobility village around the East coast is remained by the main lineage group which has taken the lead until now. Second, it is subjected to the ritual ceremony to the god who wards off evil fortune at the entrance of the village. The procedure is progressed in Confucianism Third, Tongje is simplified by the social change recently. As theresult, the number of the officiating priests and village shrines has been decreased. Also, the officiating priests' taboos have been reduced, too. Fourth, Tongje in the nobility village is working as the chance to check the religious meaning and the social relationship between the residents.
last, for centuries, rapid modernization in Korea led to the collapse of the old social status system, the spread of modem values and the reduction of the rural population followed by the urbanization. These factors led to the big change in the rural community. As the result, the traditional life style and the way of thinking are replaced the new things. So it is the chance of fading the performance and the meaning of the common religion as a village unit in Younghae area where the nobility village is densely populated. Meeting the moment of these changes in the nobility village around Younghae area confirmed that it has been held on Tongje is the unique way influenced the social organization of village and the historical traits.
