The question concerning the foundations of morality can be divided into two subquestions, namely 'Why should we be moral?' and 'Why do we act morally?' The first question has been asked by philosophers for thousands of years from many different traditions. In the Western tradition Plato and Kant among many philosophers have been especially influential in their accounts of the problem of how we ought to live. They thought there is a solid reason why we should be moral, and tried to explain it in terms of the Universal-Transcendendal-Ideal structure. In this paper I refute this approach (especially the Kantian one) and pursue the second question instead. I believe we cannot give a satisfactory answer to the first question because most answers given so far have been based on the unrealistic Ideals. We could only give an answer to the second. It means that we should give up our hope to find any sort of rational justification of morality. So the method employed in this study is that of moral psychology. My conclusion is that the basis of morality is not reason but emotion or sentiment. I believe it could be fully supported by our live experience.
