The interaction theory has about 25 years of history. Through it started as a data-driven approach to SLA, now it is in the center of heated theoretical debate. Focus on form, which was proposed as the driving force of meaning negotiation for SLA, has been questioned in terms of its psychological process, such as attention and awareness at the moment of the learners" exposure to the input. Furthermore, after the moment of exposure to the input, how the noticed input is processed for eventual acquisition is the question waiting to be answered. Therefore, cognitive processes involving focus on form in terms of attention and memory are sought after by cognitively oriented SLA researchers such as Robinson(2001, 2003), VanPatten(2004) and Skehan(1998). The present paper attempts to review the history of the interaction theory and the current issues regarding the relationship between language use and acquisition in terms of the learner-internal cognitive processes. Then a brief review of domestic research will be presented and followed by the cautious prediction for the future direction of the interaction research.
