In “The Sisters,” the first episode of James Joyce’s Dubliners, the gaps, ellipses, and silences make the protagonist unnamed boy as well as all the readers confused. As a narrator, the boy tells the story about the spiritual frustration and physical death of Father Flynn and we hear his story and then try to understand the meanings of the strangely resonant words uttered from his mouth: paralysis, gnomon, and simony. After all, what happened to cause Father Flynn’s mental and physical decline is the primary question. However, the answer for this question is not clear because nobody, including the protagonist and the narrator, does/can not diagnose the disorder or disease accurately. It is, in fact, authorial writing technique for us to read or reread clearly and perspectively and interpret what the work really means. Though the three words make us puzzled, the very ambiguous ones work together to create sign system which lets productive interpretation possible.
