In this study, the understanding, performance and difficulties of middle and high school students(129 eighth graders, 131 tenth graders, and 111 eleventh graders) with respect to three experiment themes such as the photosynthesis and respiration of the plant, interdependence between animals and plants and effect of light intensity on photosynthetic rate were examined. In the three experiments on photosynthesis and respiration involving middle and high school students, none of these experiments could be completed in a single class; further the results of the experiments confused the students because of their low consistency with the scientific knowledge presented in textbooks. Moreover, using chemicals such as bromothymol blue (BTB) and sodium bicarbonate solution in the experiments made it difficult for the students to understand them because students also had to understand the chemical reactions. In conclusion, the development of alternative experimentations, equipments and materials that enable to observe visible changes in a single class and to measure dependant variable directly and exactly is needed.
