Little is known about Chinese female doctoral students’ experiences at American universities and their identity formation through attending American universities. A qualitative research method was used to explore Chinese female doctoral students’ experiences of studying abroad. Despite a rough transition as international students, participants indicated that the experience of studying abroad promoted the development of coping skills. Each participant differed in life stages and had multiple responsibilities as doctoral international students. Additionally, participants developed conflict resolution skills to deal with microaggressions.
