Ageing is a common phenomenon across the world. In the UK and Korea, the process whereby a country becomes an ageing society is different and relative to the context of each country. In the UK, where ageing began earlier than in Korea, museums have considered retired older adults importantly as their target. Korea has experienced one of the fastest-ever demographic transitions from an ageing society to an aged society. Therefore now is the time that Korean museums should consider how to respond to older visitors’ needs.
In this article, I dealt with two programmes for older adults. ‘Soapbox’ at Tate Modern and ‘House of Memory’ at Liverpool Museum. Each programme has a different target, such as older adults and older people with dementia. I used interview data from older participants and staff related to the programme. This research aim is to find out how older adults make meaning in these museums and their motivations.
Older adults tend to visit museums for social networking, to develop personal interests, and visit with their grandchildren. Their meaning-making during the programme focuses on reminiscence and sharing their experience. Objects in museums evoked older participants to make them remember their past and share them.
Themes and objects choice is important for running the programme for older adults effectively. Co-working with a local institute related to older adults, such as hospitals, is also helpful for the programme. The programme’s aim for older adults is to share their experiences and memory, which means focusing more on their well-being. Korean museums must offer these programmes to improve their social networking and mental well-being.
