Will there be faith? Will our children have faith? We, Christians and churches stand in front of these two questions. Those questions come from great scholars in Christian education, Thomas H. Groome (Roman Catholic Church background) and John Westerhoff III (Protestant Church background). However, carrying out the task of passing on the faith, which is the core objective of Christian education, can be difficult. In Korean society, families are falling apart. Along with the collapse of families, there are other accurate representations of the situation in modern Korean society, such as; aging, death by loneliness, people living alone without family, and the severance of relationships with neighbors who do not know when someone dies next door, family education is also collapsing. How can the two communities of faith that God has established, the family and the church, pass on the gospel to their children who are suffering from the entrance exam hell in Korean society? Along with faith education in the families, Christian education in the church is also experiencing a crisis. This research thesis began with these concerns. The thesis presents a study of inter-generational spiritual education as a solution to this crisis.
The structure of this study is as follows. After the general introduction of this study in chapter I, I will deal with the definition of inter-generational education in chapter II. This includes the comparison of the difference among inter-generational education, grandparenting, and holistic inter-generational education. Following this, I will question why we call it holistic inter-generational education. In chapter III, I will address the necessity of inter-generational education, the four relational characteristics of inter-generational education by Woong-Seop Jung, and their application to the Korean Church, its limitations and problems, and how it is reviewed with the eyes of Shin-Geun Jang’s criticism. Based on the argument of James E. Loder, we will examine the necessity of holistic inter-generational spiritual education to overcome the limitations. In chapter IV, we will look into the direction and practical model of inter-generational spirituality education. And in chapter V, which is the conclusion, the summary, limitations, and future tasks of this study will be shared.
