This paper investigates the semantic expansion and syntactic changes of Chinese adjectival constructions, particularly focusing on color adjectives (红, 黑) and scalar adjectives ‘高, 低, 大, 肥’ within the ‘(S)+Aₐₛₚ+NP’ structure. Building on the research of 이아형 and 정인정 (2023), this study analyzes how scalar adjectives transition from the ‘(S)+VAₐₛₚ+NP’ structure to the ‘(S)+Aₐₛₚ+NP’ form, and how these transformations affect various grammatical features such as unaccusativity, ergativity, and transitivity.
The research primarily examines how the semantic expansion of adjectives leads to diverse syntactic changes through unaccusativity, ergativity, and transitivity. By comparing how the possibility of verb addition and syntactic acceptability varies across adjectives, the study elucidates the interactions between adjectival meaning and syntactic characteristics. The characteristics of each construction, including ‘(S)+高ₐₛₚ+O’, ‘(S)+低ₐₛₚ+O’, ‘(S)+大ₐₛₚ+O’, and ‘(S)+肥ₐₛₚ+O’, were analyzed to determine how adjectives expand their meanings and induce grammatical changes within the constructions.
This paper provides important insights into the syntactic utilization and semantic expansion of Chinese adjectives, offering a deeper understanding of the semantic and syntactic properties of Chinese through the possibilities of intensification and concretization when verbs are added. This research serves as a valuable foundational resource for Chinese language education and grammatical studies, enhancing our comprehension of language structure and application.
