It is said that Korean, Japanese, and Chinese are under the same cultural influence of Chinese characters. However, forms and meanings of Chinese characters have been modified to suit the local needs.
The purposes of this study are to investigate how many of everyday Chinese characters are commonly used in three countries and to analyze the status quo of Chinese characters in common use. With a focus on Chinese characters commonly used in Japan, we investigated different meanings of nouns written in Chinese characters and compared their forms in different countries.
As to forms, it was found that everyday Chinese characters in Korea and Japan not identical to those in China were mainly abbreviated ones, and that differences between Korea and Japan were largely attributable to new Japanese forms.
In reading Chinese characters aloud, 205 represented the same meanings in Korea, Japan, and China. One reason is that many Chinese characters were borrowed in translated versions around the age of Meiji, e.g., newspaper, science, electricity, telephone, and law.
Since some characters are also used to express different meanings, it is necessary to create a database of Chinese characters that are in common use in three countries so that they can be shared for mutual understanding. For this kind of task, we need to work on the development of interchangeable characters, how to share abbreviated forms of Chinese characters, and how to standardize Chinese characters written in new Japanese or Korean styles.
