The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean high school students' knowledge of collocational expressions. Specifically, the following research questions were raised: ⑴ Is there any relationship between their collocational knowledge and their general English proficiency? ⑵ Is there any relationship between their collocational knowledge and their vocabulary knowledge? To this end, 93 Korean high school students were asked to take the collocation test and the vocabulary test which had been designed based on the results of corpus analysis of high school 10th-grade textbooks. Their general English proficiency was measured by a national academic ability test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in learners‘ knowledge of collocations according to their general English proficiency. The higher students’ level of English proficiency was, the better the result of the students’ score on the collocation test. However, there were not significant differences in learners’ knowledge of collocations according to their vocabulary knowledge. The students' performance on the collocation test did not increase as their level of knowledge of relatively difficult vocabulary with low frequency increased. These results may suggest that knowing the meanings of words without understanding of their actual use in contexts does not contribute to the improvement of learners' collocational knowledge. Pedagogical implications will be discussed.
