With the increasing importance of the collocational approaches to vocabulary learning in the EFL environment, the present study aims to investigate Korean EFL learners' collocational competence by asking them to participate in the task of controlled writing. Two hundred high school students in Busan participated in the task with 25 questions, which can be categorized by 4 criteria: level of difficulty, L1 transparency, presence in the textbooks and collocation types. The rates of correct responses were examined and statistical results showed that the criterion of presence in the textbook was the only significant factor affecting students' use of collocations in writing. The other factors assumed to be major factors in the previous studies turned out to be insignificant. These findings suggest that we should rethink collocation type-based or L1 transparency-based teaching methodologies, which lead us to realize the crucial role that textbooks play in EFL classrooms. Despite increasing accessibilities to multimedia and authentic materials outside the classrooms, textbooks appear to remain as the leading source for exposure to English in Korean EFL environments.
