The purpose of this study is to completely describe the semantic functions of Korean suffix ‘-ne’(-네). For this purpose, in this research we concretely analyzed the semantic functions of suffix "-ne" in Jeonnam dialect according to the diachronic change aspect. The results were as follows:
First, the 15 century form of suffix ‘-ne’(-네) was ‘-nɛ’(내) and it was primarily plural suffix used both as honor and humble terms.
Second, according to the definition of Research Institute of Korean Studies, Korea University(2009), ‘-ne’ is used for 3 categories of semantic function, that is the plural suffix for non-honor term, and the singular suffix for honor and humble terms.
Third, in Jeonnam dialect, ‘-ne’ is conservatively reflecting the same plural suffix function for non-honor term in middle Korean or used as a factor composing a female addressing form.
As we identified above, to describe semantic functions of Korean suffix "-ne" completely, the effort to include the semantic functions which is actually used in the Korean dialects is required. Of course it is difficult to include all the aspects of geographical, social variation of the semantic functions a morpheme has, at least it is necessary to describe the diachronic characteristics of Korean, or changes.
