This ESP research investigated abbreviations specifically used in the airline reservation English in order to provide morphological accounts of the word shortening process. Total 523 were identified from the database (airline reservation manuals and reservation samples) and were categorized into the word formation types including airlines" domain-specific types of deletion(29%) and code(19%) as well as more conventional types of acronym(27%) and clipping(24%). When the letter counts and the parts of speech were considered, the distribution of word formation types suggests that the airline reservation English minimized the grapheme counts as much as possible at the expense of phonetic hints of original words. The findings suggest that the patterns of word shortening process could reflect characteristics of the users, and the medium of communications. Importantly, the existence of abbreviation coinage principles in airline reservation English supports that the English of CRS (computer reservation system) is viewed as an independent genre for the ESP study. The findings from this cross-discipline study such as linguistics and airline reservations, would be used to enhance students" and workers" awareness on shortened words of 1 to 5 letters which have somewhat unique and specific types and patterns compared to those of SMS.
