In this study, the participants comprised 237 Chinese post-80, 90s generation employees in different industries. We used structural equation analysis to test the variables of the proposed model simultaneously and also explored the mediation effect of intrinsic motivation between empowering leadership and innovative work behavior, and the moderating effect of self-esteem. Results showed that empowering leadership was positively related to intrinsic motivation and innovative work behavior, intrinsic motivation was positively related to innovative work behavior, and intrinsic motivation mediated the relationship between empowering leadership and innovative work behavior. Moreover, self-esteem moderated the relationship between empowering leadership and intrinsic motivation. However, Self-esteem moderates the strength of the mediated relationship between empowering leadership and innovative work behavior via intrinsic motivation, such that the mediated relationship is weaker when self-esteem is high. Perhaps, due to the culture of Confucianism and collectivism, and the character weaknesses and personality, Chinese post-80,90s generation employees who are high self-esteem may should be managed by rules or regulations than the supposed freedom or autonomy.
