This paper analyzes the function of Korean verbal suffixes from the perspective of metapragmatics. A sentence has metapragmatic information, which is the information about pragmatics, in addition to syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic information. The metapragmatic information of verbal suffixes include information on the informational state of the proposition and the speaker’s emotional information for the proposition. In this paper, it is first seen that the suffixes ‘-ci/-tanta’ and ‘-ney/-kuna’ differ in their informational state such as new and old information, based on previous studies, and the differences are reflected in the information state of Common Ground. Next, the study analyzed the function of the verbal suffixes within the dialogue model of Ginzburg(2012), which can describe the change of Common Ground in each participant of discourse. As a result, the study can understand the differences of the verbal suffixes from the metapragmatic viewpoint beyond semantics or pragmatics. This work contrasts the previous studies that deal with the differences of the verbal suffixes by means of the unrelated semantic or pragmatic concepts such as verum focus, evidentiality, mirativity.
