It is difficult to regard the brotherly alliance between Mongol and Goryeo in the early 13th century as the diplomatic relationship between nations(monarchs). There is no record which proves that the monarchs of the two countries called or considered each other a brother after the alliance. Instead, there are records of the fact that King Gojong of Goryeo called Genghis Khan the “emperor” and himself a “subject” accepting the ruler and ruled relationship. The Mongol-Goryeo Brotherly Alliance is a personal relationship between commanders of the two countries’ armies to repel the Khitans during the Battle of Gangdong Fortress, and the alliance is strictly different from the ruler and ruled relationship built by Mongol dispatching an envoy to Goryeo after the battle. In the first half of the 14th century, it was known that Goryeo became aware of the brotherly alliance in the early 13th century for the first time and began to document it. These records are the memory that intellectuals of Goryeo “manipulated” by exaggerating the meaning of the personal relationship between military commanders because the view of historical presentation of that time in which Mongol constructed world order and a subordinate relationship with the country took strong root required the emphasis of a friendly relationship with the two countries and the royal family’s devotion to Mongol.
