This study explores the effects of the experiences of the Gwangju uprising and May Movement on social changes in Gwangju. For This study frame analysis is applied Two framing processes were identified one is the democratic frame maintained by anti-government movements activists against the totalitarian military government and the other is the frame of equality and fraternity constructed in the middle of the uprising by the populace. These framing processes are based on different meaning constructions and interpretations of the situations of the Gwangju uprising. Through these different framing processes different collective identities were constructed. Identity construction is especially related to boundary framing. Through boundary framing, a 'we-they" distinction is possible and a different collective identity become consolidated.
From the Gwangju uprising until now, many social movements organizations, so-called May movements organizations, have emerged. These organizations are based on different experiences from the uprising. These organizations include members who were wounded, families of the dead, and those who were arrested or tortured during the uprising. Organizations of the wounded and families of the dead mostly consist of lower-class people while those who were arrested are anti-government activists and members of the elite class in Gwangju. Each organization interprets the situation differently and thus constructs meanmg accordingly. These movement organizations have their own collective identities based on their own boundary framing and compete with each other within Gwangiu Society. This leads to changes in social structure of Gwangju which did not exist before the Gwangju uprising.
