I'd like to examine the aspect of Gwangju Uprismg's literary representation by dividing 'before' the June Uprising of 1987 and 'after' that. The reason is written below
The Gwangju Uprising is the event which rose from May 16, 1980 to May 27, but the period was condensation of the whole 1980's. The ideology and contents of the Gwangju Uprising have continued as an unseen front oppsing the military power Writers who tried to inherit the meaning of the uprising stood against military government. That's why all literary practice had a political tendency.
May literature before the June Uprising internalized policy. It was illegal to mention the May Uprising Furthermore, advocating legitimacy of the uprising itself was illegal. Poetry led this period's literature. Major sentiments of poetry were isolation, disclosure, and indicment. Novels showed the entity of uprising through detouring, Since novels couldn't achieve restoring the wholeness of uprising.
May literature after the June uprising was the form in which policy was subordinate to literature. Reinterpretation and reconstruction about the Gwangju Uprising was done by the viewpoint of 'worker class factionalism'. Ideological distinction was emphasized. From that period, the idea of restoring the truth of the uprising as a whole was diluted. After the dismantling of the U.S.S.R, the centripetal force cohesion of May literature were weak and it showed only materialistic access to the uprising.
