The aim of this study is to classify and analyze theatres scripts written between 1980 and 2002 which represent the Gwangju Uprising, and to determine the pattern of changes and the characteristics of plays in the Gwangju Uprising theater movement.
First, I analyze the representation of the history and memory of the Gwangju Uprising and the pattern of changes by period, considering not only the changes in political circumstances as a variable for distinguishing periods but also the inside and outside condition of the plays as a significant variable.
Secondly, the pattern of changes in the theater movement on the Gwangju Uprising by periods was classified as follow The First Period of Theatre Movement. the 'Symbolical Representation'(1980-1986); the Second Period of Theatre Movement: The 'Realitic Representation'(1987-1995), The Third Period of Theatre Movement. The Stagnation of theatre(1996-1999), The Fourth Period of Theatre Movement: The Diversification of theatre(2000-).
The results of the classification of the theatres based on the formalities of representation showed change in forms and techniques as well as the diversification of materials.
