Research on the relationship between the Gwangju Uprising and the U.S. was triggered by the democratic movement in 1980s. It is because democratic movement in 1980s paid attention to the role of America during the Gwangju Uprising, that controlled South Korean military establishment. Therefore, existing works focused on U.S. evaluation on the uprising and new junta in the late 1970s and the early 1980s.
Lee Sam Sung is one of outstanding works on the issue. Examining changes in U.S. foreign policy in the late 1970s, he tried to explain the situation that the V.S. could not help supporting new junta rather than democratic movement group in South Korea at that time. His works was based on U.S. documents which were opened around 1988 from the viewpoint of the world system theory.
However, there are many limits in current research tendency. First of all, so many raw materials did not yet declassified, and it should be needed to exhume new resources like oral histories of people who involved the issue.
Moreover it is not possible to illuminate power relation between the U.S. and diverse political groups in South Korea, as works from the world system theory's perspective focus on U.S. role and policy. This tendency is producing very unilateral viewpoint. In addition, to rescue Korean-U.S. relationship from a 'myth' that the relationship was not normal one because the Korean Peninsula has been an ideological battle-field should be necessary.
Gradually declassified raw materials related "the Gwangju Uprising and the U.S." more and more increased. And new theories and perspectives in the field of the international relations are creating. It is not the ending, but a staring point for research the U.S. policy toward the uprising and the new junta.
