It has been remained to be vague of American role and position for sometime in the process of Gwangju Uprising. The government of United States denied the involvement of US government through a submitted official statement to the public hearing on Gwangju Uprising in 1987. But, such an insistence turned out to be lie after the secret documents of US government has revealed. The US government seemed to recognize the new Military regime already in power by the time of early May in 1980. The New Military regime has already dispatched the military troops to the major cities for cracking down the street demonstrations and executing the extended nationwide marshal law while they are adjusting the strategies with the US government. Gwangju Uprising occurred at this point, and US government agreed with the New Military regime to suppress the Uprising. But, the Uprising did not stop rather it grew to a larger scale of Uprising. The US government decided to suppress the Uprising completely after examined the worst scenario that there would be a lot of casualties. The US government evacuated the Americans and foreigners resided in Gwangju and dispatched an air carrier to the sea near Korean peninsula in May 26. The very next day of May 27, the New Military regime reported to the Joint US-Korean Mllitary Command right after the completion of retaking over the city.
