Artists, who had wxperienced the Gwangju Uprising, groped oft two ways about problem. First, a part of accomplished artists agonized about how they can configurate the Gwangju Uprising. Second, the students, who majored in fine arts and new age artists were trying to organize as a movement. In this process, the two groups established their identity as popular artists. A representative organization was <Gwangju Liberty Artist Society> It was their idea that works of art have to be created as social revolution.
In the middle of 80's, one of the representative May artists, Hong Sung-dam and <Vision Medium Research Center> were very active. In this period, woodcut print was the prominent trend for popularization of art Another noticeable form was the huge hanged picture. This is characterized by collaborated creation, collaborated enjoyment, large size and transference. One of the examples was <History of National Liberation Movement>.
Generally, 1980's May pictures featured non-narrative content. Techniques for instant appeal and poetic sensibility were needed. After the 1980's May pictures concentrated on various formal experiments and subject exploration. Sculpture cut a conspicuous figure Famous works of art are <From May to Victory>, <The Statue of Gwangju Citizen>.
The distinct achievement of 1990's May picture was the record picture. Lee Jun-seok's record picture <A Senes of Whaum Gwangju> showed the narrative feature. While 1980's works expressed non-narrative character, 1990's works showed narrative character after the record picture.
